Discussion

In Traditional Chinese Medicine,  obesity and/or excess appetite has been conceptualized in a variety of ways, based on these beliefs about the causes of obesity, a variety of acupoints are targeted in the treatment of obesity.

The philosophy of TCM emphasizes on ‘personalized therapy ’, depending on the symptoms and signs, different patients may be given different acupuncture treatment.

Acupuncture was better tolerated than Western drugs, with reportedly less weight gain after treatment discontinuation.

This study had several limitations:

  • The number of RCT was small

  • The quality of trials and the reporting of trial methodologies were generally weak

  • Most studies to date have been of short duration

Future recommendations

  • Adequate placebo controls

  • Standardized treatment

  • Evaluate as a complementary treatment

  • Long-term studies

6

Conclusion

In this study indicates that acupuncture for obesity has some beneficial effect compared to placebo or lifestyle control, although the results are of limited value due to the poor methodological quality of the included studies which prevent us from drawing a definitive conclusion for the effectiveness of acupuncture. However, acupuncture therapy for obesity is a relatively safe treatment.
